New heritage panel at Bawtry Community Library

260827 Battle Idle display panel at BCL 1On 22nd October 2025 we posted about a heritage lectern we had installed on Gainsborough Road (in the lay-by just beyond Bawtry bridge) about the Battle of the Idle. That battle, which took place in CE 616, featured King Raedwald of East Anglia, who is believed to have been buried at the famous ship burial at Sutton Hoo. The Sutton Hoo Society funded that lectern. We’ve now installed a heritage panel about the battle on the external wall of Bawtry Community Library. Whereas the Bawtry bridge lectern details the actual battle, the library panel is more about the battle’s political aspects and its significance for English – and Bawtry’s – history.
We’re very grateful for Sutton Hoo Society’s funding of the lectern, and for their advice about the content of the new panel. Thanks are due also to the Trustees of the library and to the City of Doncaster for allowing us to affix the panel to the wall.
There are more heritage panels/lecterns to come at the library. The next one will be about RAF Bawtry.
