One of the buildings marked on the Town Trail is Saint Nicholas church. The entry refers to the fact that Bawtry’s wharf used to be just east of the church. “Welcome to Bawtry” signs used to describe the town as a “12th Century Port” – which used to confuse people because there wasn’t a river visible in the town, let alone a port. Our new lectern will tell you the fascinating story. It’s located at the entrance to the recreation ground, on the bridleway which runs from the bottom of Wharf Street to the railway viaduct arches.
